I Don't Like The Idea. What Am I Going To Do?
I seldom work with an inpatient person, but they usually scares me. Most of inpatient people are easy to deny things and distinguish their dislikes. In other words, if an inpatient man hears some ideas that he dislikes, he probably will say no to the idea. However, this is not the worst part. The worst part is that this aggressive emotion will affect and scare other teammates, because no one likes to be denied. Once people are afraid to be denied, they will flinch from speaking. Nevertheless, if the man tries to be patient, whole team will be different. Being patient to listen to the speaker is easily to show the respect to others. Once people feel themselves are valuable, they probably will try to dedicate more.
Try to be positive to every idea
If a man can be patient to understand other people's idea, he probably will have some feeling of likeness or dislike. Some people will indirectly or directly say that they don't like the idea. (if they really don't like it.) However, I will say let's try to think from other's perspective and assume that we like the idea. This thought will earn more time to develop a potential idea and also give us a chance to understand our teammates. Most important is that we may find something common among our teammates in unexpected ways, and I'm sure that will make the relationship concrete. How so? an idea is based someone's past experience, but it will be modified, translated or twisted to fit the situation that the idea try to solve. On the other side, listeners will also associate their life experience with this idea, but they rarely twist the idea after their first thought. Here are some useful tips that I used to twist my thought of an idea: 1. To add something I like into the idea 2. To find the core of the idea and try to repackage it 3. Try to make a joke (fun) of it. I found those tips helped me a lot in understanding others' ideas and find common thoughts among teammates.
To add something you like into the idea
Obviously, the tip is helping me to like the idea, but this is not the most important part. This tip does help me to contour the future of the idea. Once I have some vague images about the idea, they really help me to associate other related life experience with the idea. For example, when I had a hard time to support my teammate's idea about Minotaur story in the fourth round last semester, I try to add something I like into the idea. Beyond the labyrinth (Minotaur's home), I suggest that we should add an ancient temple on the labyrinth, because I like the atmosphere of the temple better than a dark labyrinth. As a result, I became to like the idea, because I can see the possible pretty images of this idea. My teammates also quite excited about the idea, because I showed my ambition and support.
To find the core of the idea and try to repackage it
I think the tip is my essential way to consider about every idea. In order to find the core of an idea, I will try to make sure that if I understand the thought form the speaker. Sometimes I found that I like the essential of the idea, but I don't like the representation of the idea. This situation always happens when the main idea is abstract. For example, when someone mention about the idea of social game and the example is Pet Society or Farmville, I certainly like the idea core of social interactive, but those examples don't involve many social interactions. So, for my aspect, I will keep the core of the idea, but change examples which tend to involve more social interactions. This skill is extremely helpful in brainstorming phase. When someone try to clear the core of an idea, it will be much easier for other teammates to come up other thoughts of the idea. If the idea is going to be the final decision, this tip also help us to find some principles of the idea in the early phase.
Try to make a joke (fun) of it
The last tip is a lifesaver of an idea. In fact, a lot of great ideas and developments are from chatting and jokes. If I can think something funny of an idea, I will consider that as a contribution to that idea, even the relation to the idea is not strong. When we stock in an idea, our brain won't be in good conditions, because our minds are locked in a box. However, a joke has chances to help us to jump out of the box to think different. At least, a funny joke can fresh people's minds about the idea. However, no one can easily think of a joke related to the idea, and also, the man who has a joke to share has to take the risk of violating the owner of the idea. But we should never be afraid of doing that, because a happy brainstorming session can lead to a fun game.
We have many choices when we encounter some ideas that we don't like. What are we going to choose will not only affect the result of brainstorming but also the atmosphere and relations among teammates. So, trying to be positive to every ideas can help us a lot both in results and relations.
